Northern Europe’s leading maritime tech ecosystem by 2030

The Nordic region holds a unique opportunity to become a global leader in sustainable maritime innovation. Despite world-class ports and strong innovation ecosystems, there is no dedicated open network of maritime testbeds and demonstration environments (T&Ds) to support SMEs and startups in testing, validating, and scaling future green solutions.

Project details

  • Project description: The Nordic Testbed project addresses the urgent need for accessible, open, and collaborative maritime test and demonstration environments (T&Ds) across the Nordic region. Despite world-class ports and strong innovation ecosystems, SMEs and startups often face high entry barriers, limited access to real-world testing, and fragmented opportunities—slowing down the transition to sustainable maritime solutions.

Our approach is to map existing and potential Nordic T&Ds, identify SME testing needs, and develop business models that connect innovators with the most suitable test environments. By leveraging complementary strengths—such as CCUS expertise in Copenhagen, blue bioeconomy in Hirtshals, and green mobility in Gothenburg—the project will establish a cross-border T&D ecosystem enabling faster commercialization of green maritime technologies.

By 2030, the vision is a Nordic-wide testbed infrastructure supporting at least 25 SMEs annually, positioning the Nordics as a global leader in sustainable maritime innovation.
